Former Heavyweight Champion George Foreman Speaks at Muhammad Ali Center Celebration

Two boxers linked throughout history were again tied together last week.  On Friday, George Foreman was the featured speaker at a ceremony honoring Muhammad Ali.

Sports Illustrated renamed their Sports Legacy Award the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.  The ceremony took place at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

It was a particularly important day in Ali’s career as Friday was the 40th anniversary of his “Thilla in Manila” win over Joe Frazier.  As one of the legend’s main contemporaries, Foreman was uniquely qualified to speak about the fighter.

Foreman once lost his heavyweight title to Ali in 1974 in a fight dubbed, “The Rumble in the Jungle”.  Remarkably, he would regain the belt 20 years later becoming the oldest Heavyweight Champion ever at age 45.

As an amateur, Foreman won Olympic gold in 1968.  He is a member of both the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Since moving on from the ring, Foreman has been a successful businessman and ambassador for boxing.  His George Foreman Grill has sold over $100 million units worldwide.
