During his iconic playing career as a two-sport star, former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward had to make sure his mind was right at all times. That mental focus was a main point of conversation when he spoke last week at a student-led conference at Florida A&M University.
The event was held for the Association for Applied Sports Psychology in FAMU's Pharmacy Building. The mission of the conference was to interest students in sports and exercise psychology.
Ward talked about the challenges he faced playing professional basketball. He also discussed the importance of work ethic when trying to overcome those obstacles.
Ward is one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. He led Florida State University to their first football national championship in 1993, the same year he won the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award.
Ward went on to play 11 seasons as a point guard in the NBA. He spent the majority of his career with the New York Knicks and helped them reach the 1999 NBA Finals.
Ward is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Florida Sports Hall of Fame. This past December, his biography, "The Athlete: Greatness, Grace and the Unprecedented Life of Charlie Ward," was published.
