Former Knicks Stars Help Raise Money For Children's Education at Poker Tournament

Last Wednesday, several ex-NBA stars joined other notables in Midtown Manhattan to raise money for education.  Power brokers from Wall Street joined former Knicks’ Allan Houston, Charles Smith, John Starks, and other celebs at the “Take ‘Em To School” charity poker tournament.

In total, the group raised right around $850,000 for Education Reform Now, an advocacy group or children’s education.  The night was emceed by poker pro Phil Hellmuth and also attended by other standouts from poker.

Houston was a two-time All-Star and once known as the highest-paid player in the NBA.  Today, he serves as an assistant general manager for the Knicks and the lead GM for the franchise’s D-League team, the Westchester Knicks.

Over a nine-year career, Smith averaged 14.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.  He spent parts of four of those seasons with the Knicks, contributing to their rise as NBA championship contenders in the early 1990s.

Starks was one of the stars on those Knicks teams that would eventually reach the 1994 NBA Finals.  That season, he made the All-Star team and he is still the career leader in three-pointers made for the team.
