On Thursday, the Orcutt Club of Bridgeport is hosting their first Celebrity Sports Night. They are bringing in former major league catcher John Flaherty to serve as the keynote speaker.
The event serves as a way to celebrate the club's 129-year effort to better the lives of youth in Bridgeport. It takes place at 6 p.m. at Port 5 Naval Veterans.
A $40 donation gains interested attendees admission, a porketta dinner and complimentary drink. In addition to Flaherty, other former and current sports stars like NBA veteran Wes Matthews will be in attendance.
Flaherty had a 14-year career behind the plate for five different franchises. The Boston Red Sox originally drafted him in 1988 and he made his big league debut in 1992.
Flaherty was one of the early stars of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays franchise and served as their everyday catcher from 1998-2002. The New York City native ended his career with the Yankees and officially retired following the 2005 season.
Today, Flaherty serves as an analyst for the Yankees' YES Network. He is a member of the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame and the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.
