One of the top baseball managers in recent memory is heading to Indiana for a special fundraiser. Lou Piniella is the speaker tomorrow at the Pitch in for Youth fundraiser in Kokomo.
The event benefits the Thatcher Foundation, who selects a different group each year to donate proceeds to. This year, they chose New Leaf Mentoring, a group that provides mentors to children of incarcerated parents.
In addition to Piniella's presentation, there will also be a live auction and autograph session at the event. Tickets to attend are $50 for adults and $25 for children.
Piniella played 16 seasons with the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees before embarking on an impressive managerial career. His debut on the bench came with the Yankees in 1986.
With 1,853 career victories, Piniella ranks 14th on the all-time managerial wins list. He won two World Series as a player, but captured the 1990 Fall Classic as a manager with the Cincinatti Reds.
On two occasions with the Seattle Mariners, Piniella was named American League Manager of the Year. In 2001, he led the Mariners to a major league-tieing 116 regular season wins.
