If Chicago Cubs fans needed any further indication that baseball season is right around the corner, the annual Cubs Convention surely will do the trick. The event slated for this weekend at the Sheraton Grand Chicago is already sold out.
Former pitches Ryan Dempster will close the convention's first day with one of the more anticipated sessions. Friday Night with Ryan Dempster is a live interview show with Cubs players, coaches, and alumni.
There are 35 current players slated to be in attendance, 18 famed alumni, and several members of the Cubs baseball staff. Some of the luminaries include manager Joe Maddon, 2015 rookie sensation Kyle Schwarber, and Hall of Fame legend Ryne Sandberg.
Dempster was known throughout his career for his colorful personality and pitched nine seasons in Chicago. Dempster was a two-time All-Star over his 16-year career, including the 2008 campaign with the Cubs that may have been his best.
In that banner year, Dempster went 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA, finishing sixth in Cy Young Award voting and helping the franchise make the postseason. Overall, Dempster won over 15 games three times and also spent a trio of seasons as the Cubs closer.
Dempster has stayed busy in retirement. He is a special assistant to Chicago general manager Theo Epstein and is an analyst on the MLB Network.
