Former NFL player Michael Sam has become a powerful symbol for the LGBTQ community. This Thursday, he will speak about hsi journey as the keynote presenter at University of Louisville Pride Week.
The event was coordinated by UL's Student Activities Board and the LGBT Center. Sam's presentation takes place at 7 p.m. at the Swain Student Activities Center.
Tickets are free and open to the public, but registration is requried. Sam will hopefully inspire others to chase their dreams and not worry about existing prejudices.
While at the University of Missouri, Sam was one of the most dominant defensive forces in college football. In 2013, he was a first-team All-Southeastern Conference performer, a unanimous All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Following his time with the Tigers, he came out as gay. He became the first publically gay player to get taken in the NFL Draft when he was selected in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams in 2014.
Sam's public candidness about his sexuality led to winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award that same year at the ESPYs. While he is no longer in the NFL, he has not closed the book on his football career and still hopes to be signed by another team.
