Former NFL quarterback Jake Delhomme has always had a special connection with the state of Louisiana. He still lives locally in Breaux Bridge where he raises and trains race horses.
Delhomme also has fond memories at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, where he completed his bachelor's degree in 2001 while playing for the New Orleans Saints.This past Friday, he was the fall commencement speaker at UL-Lafayette.
He spoke to 1,300 students at the Cajundome and preached the importance of education. Delhomme was also able to share lessons he learned from an NFL career that once looked doomed, but eventually resulted in success.
Delhomme was an undrafted free agent and a practice squad player for the Saints for a pair of seasons while playing in NFL Europe. When he signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2003, his career took off.
Delhomme became the starting quarterback and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in his first season. In 2005, Carolina went back to the NFC Championship Game, Delhomme posted career highs in completion percentage and passer rating, and made his only Pro Bowl squad.
He remained the Panthers starting quarterback until 2009 and finished with career team records for passing yard and touchdowns. Delhomme finished his career with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans.
