Former NHL Star Theo Fleury Hosts Series of Events at HOPE Forum

Earlier this month, former NHL star Theo Fleury leant his time to help The HOPE North Suicide Prevention Committee.  They held a HOPE forum April 15-16 at the Thompson Regional Community Center in Manitoba, Canada.

Fleury opened the event by hosting a pucks and pancake brunch that was free to conference attendees and $10 for the public.  In addition, he did a book signing and discussion as part of his morning activities.

That night, Fleury gave a keynote presentation at 7 p.m. at the Letkemann Theatre.  There were a host of other speakers and breakout sessions throughout the two days.

Despite being one of the smallest players in the NHL during his generation, Fleury defied the odds to lace up his skates in over 1,000 career games.  He was selected to seven All-Star Games and averaged over a point per game over his 15 seasons.

Fleury won an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada in 2002 and a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989.  He is most identified with the Flames, spending 11 seasons with the franchise.

Fleury has become successful in his post-hockey life and he released a best-selling autobiography in 2009 that detailed his background being sexually abused by a coach growing up.  Since, he has become a powerful advocate for sexual abuse victims.
