While former Ohio State star running back Maurice Clarett did not achieve ultimate success in the NFL, he still has an inspiring message about bouncing back from adversity. Clarett shared his journey and suggested some pitfalls to avoid Wednesday night at Youngstown State’s Hope Conference.
The conference is meant to enable former prisoners to live successful lives free from being behind bars. It was hosted in the Kilcawley Center at YSU, where Clarett’s former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel is now university president.
When he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for aggravated-robbery and concealed-weapons, Clarett hit an all-time low. Since being released in 2010, he has become an entrepreneur and gives almost 100 talks annually imploring people to go down a better road.
As a freshman, Clarett was the toast of Columbus, Ohio. He ran for 1,287 yards and 18 touchdowns as the Buckeyes won the BCS National Championship in 2002.
Despite the banner campaign, Clarett would never play another down for Ohio State following the filing of a false police report. He tried to make it in the NFL, becoming a third round draft pick of the Denver Broncos, but was cut in training camp.
While everything may not have gone according to his plan, Clarett has still been able to overcome all and be a positive influence in the world.
