The LEAD Sports Summit has been designed to teach female teenage swimmers important lessons. Those in attendance this year could not get a better crash course from anyone other than former Olympic swimming captain Elizabeth Beisel.
Beisel was one of five female Olympians chosen to speak at the event, which will take place over Labor Day Weekend in Atlanta, GA. LEAD stands for Leadership, Empowerment and Athletic Development and the organization was founded by three-time Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce.
Beisel will also be joined by five-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin in the group of speakers. She spoke at the first summit last year and tried to present on leadership in a relatable way.
"Speaking at LEAD was something equally empowering as it was reflective," said Beisel in a release. "I put myself in the girls’ shoes and spoke about leadership in the most honest and relatable terms possible. After speaking at the Summit, it made me look back on my teenage years and wish that I would have had something like LEAD when I was growing up. This makes speaking about leadership even more rewarding because I know I am giving the girls knowledge to inspire not only themselves, but other people around them.”
Beisel competed at the Olympics in 2008, 2012 and 2016. She was a U.S. Swimming captain in 2016 and won medals in the 400-meter IM and 200 m backstroke at the 2012 Games.
Beisel debuted on the Olympic stage as Team USA's youngest swimmer in 2008 and finished in the top five in both the 400 m IM and the 200 m backstroke. During her career. she won three World Championship medals and four medals at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Beisel competed collegiately at the University of Florida, where she was an 18-time All-American. She also won nine individual SEC championships and two NCAA titles.
