Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe has been known for years for his progressive takes on an array of issues. That’s why it was no surprise when Kluwe recently took part in a TED talk on technology in football.
He also participated in a TED panel alongside sports science journalist David Epstein and ESPN Sports Science producer Cynthia Bir. One of the more unique possibilities discussed was the future of virtual reality that may allow fans to see the game from individual player’s perspectives through their visors.
Kluwe sees a time as well when plays might be diagramed for the athletes on their visors. The panel also went over what future advancements in sports psychology and neuroscience might look like.
Kluwe played eight seasons in the NFL, all for the Minnesota Vikings. He was considered one of the top punters in the sport throughout his career and holds team records for career and single-season punting average.
While an outstanding player on the field, Kluwe really gained notoriety due to his strong stances in favor of same-sex marriage and gay rights. Even in retirement, he continues to share his views with a variety of audiences around the country.
