The 25th year of the Pillars of America Speaker Series recently came to a close. On May 4th, former standout running back Larry Csonka was the final speaker.
The event was held in Juneau, Alaska at Centennial Hall. Csonka's hourlong presentation was peppered with several stories about his playing days with the Miami Dolphins.
He also spoke about life influences that helped him be successful. One of those people was his legendary coach in the NFL, Don Shula.
Csonka spent 11 seasons in the NFL, but is best known for his tenure with the Dolphins from 1968-74. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro.
In 1972, Csonka was part of Miami's undefeated team that won Super Bowl VII. The following year, the Dolphins repeated as Super Bowl champions and he was MVP of the game.
After spending time in the World Football League and with the New York Giants, Csonka was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year during his final pro season in Miami in 1979. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Dolphins Ring of Honor.
