In recent years, the Toronto Blue Jays have become even more crystallized as Canada's baseball team. That has stirred up a renewed interest across the country in some of the team's stars of yesteryear.
One of those former standouts, Kelly Gruber, is making an appearance in Tsawwassen, British Columbia on Saturday. He is holding an autograph signing from 1-2:30 p.m. at Pastime Sports & Games at Tsawwassen Mills.
There is a suggested donation of $20 per autograph. Proceeds benefit Survivors Supporting Survivors, an organization that advocates for and provides support to victims of childhood sexual abuse.
Gruber was part of one of the great eras of Blue Jays baseball. The Cleveland Indians originally selected him in the first round of the 1980 MLB Draft and he was acquired by Toronto in the 1983 Rule 5 Draft.
Gruber garnered a full-time role with the franchise by 1987 and hit for the first cycle in team history in 1989. He had his best season in 1990, hitting .274 with 31 home runs and 118 RBI.
That season, Gruber was named to his second All-Star team, won a Gold Glove and finished fourth in American League MVP voting. He won a World Series with the Blue Jays in 1992 and spent one final season with the California Angels in 1993.
