Former Wisconsin Basketball Coach Bo Ryan to be Honored at the Dick Vitale Gala

There are not many people in sports who do more to raise money for cancer research than noted basketball analyst Dick Vitale.  Vitale's annual Gala raised $2.3 million last year for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

This year, Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan will be one dignitary present to be honored.  Ryan has actively fundraised for pediactric cancer research.

The event will be held on May 13th in Sarasota, Florida at the Ritz Carlton.  Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer will also be recognized for their efforts to rasie awareness.

Following a lengthy 15-year tenure at Wisconsin, Ryan retired this December as the winningest coach in program history.  He took the Badgers to the NCAA Tournament every season, made it to the Sweet Sixteen seven times, and last year finished as national runner-up.

Ryan was a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.  He has the most conference wins in program history and led to UW to each of their four 30-win seasons.

Prior to taking the Wisconsin job in 2001, Ryan was the head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Platteville.  He won three NCAA Division III National Championships with UW-Platteville and overall his head coaching record stands at 747-233.
