Kirk Gibson authored some of the most memorable moments in baseball. Along the way, he made legions of fans proud at his alma mater, Michigan State.
Gibson will return to East Lansing this spring to inspire a new generation of Spartans as they go out in the world. He is the school's undergraduate commencement speaker on May 5th.
The convocation will be held at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. In addition to speaking, Gibson will receive an honorary doctorate of humanities.
Prior to going on to baseball glory, Gibson was a two-sport star at MSU and he will be inducted this year into the College Football Hall of Fame. The hometown Detroit Tigers made him a first-round pick in 1978 and he spent the first nine years of his career with the club.
During the 1984 postseason, Gibson was named Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series and then scored the winning run for the Tigers in the World Series. During his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988, he was named National League MVP.
In Game 1 of the World Series that year, a hobbled Gibson hit a walk-off pinch-hit home run and the Dodgers would go on to win the series in five games. Since retiring in 1995, he has been a coach and manager and he currently is a color commentator for the Tigers.
