UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford is no stranger to Franklin, Indiana. The native will return home next month as the commencement speaker at Franklin College.
Alford will speak to the school's Class of 2016 on May 21st. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Spurlock Center Gymnasium on campus.
Commencement is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. In addition to speaking, Alford will receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the college.
Alford is fresh off his third season with the Bruins. The team made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in his first two years on the job.
After an iconic playing career, Alford has had a lengthy coaching tenure at several stops. Prior to arriving at UCLA, he won four Mountain West Conference titles and took New Mexico to three NCAA Tournaments in six seasons.
As a player at Indiana, Alford was a three-time first-team All-Big Ten pick and two-time consensus first-team All-American. He won a national championship as a senior and went on to play four NBA seasons before entering the coaching profession.
