Wednesday provided a very unique opportunity to honor the very best in sports at the ninth annual Sports Business Awards. Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob was recognized for turning around the fortunes of his franchise with the Sports Executive of the Year Award.
The event was held at the Marriott Marquis in New York City at Times Square. Lacob beat out NASCAR's Brian France, Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and Nike executive Mike Parker.
Voting for the Sports Executive of the Year was conducted by the editorial staff of Sports Business Journal. They hand out honors in 17 categories each year, with the majority of the voting being split up between the SBJ staff and an external panel of sports executives.
Since leading the purchasing group of the Warriors in 2010, Lacob has helped the franchise reinvent itself. Last season, Golden State won the NBA title and this year they set a regular season record with 73 wins.
The Warriors have also experienced significant success as a brand off the court. They currently have a record number of season ticket holders and boast a 28,000 person waiting list for seats.
In addition to heading the Golden State ownership group, Lacob is also a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He has been with the venture capital company since 1987.
