Last month, Chicago golf fans got a real thrill. Hall of Famer Gary Player was the keynote speaker at the Western Golf Association’s Green Coat Gala.
The gala was held at the Peninsula Chicago on October 16th and raised $800,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation. The charity funds full college scholarships and living expenses for caddies.
In addition to speaking Player met with members of the media and conducted an on-stage interview with Golf Channel’s Mark Rolfing. The Chicago Tribune conducted a Q&A with the golf legend on a variety of topics.
Player is one of only five men to win the modern day Grand Slam and captured nine major championships overall. He has totaled 165 victories over six decades of his illustrious career.
Player is considered one of the treasures of golf. The South African inspired a generation of golfers from his country, such as major champion Ernie Els.
An avid proponent of fitness, Player was one of the first golfers to use an extensive workout regimen. He currently is active in many business interests, including golf course design and work with The Player Foundation.
