Hall of Fame Shortstop Ozzie Smith Speaks at Event for Black History Month

Baseball season is right around the corner and the St. Louis Public Library brought in one former superstar this month. Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith was the honored guest.

During an hour-long moderated Q&A, Smith talked about blacks in professional baseball as part of the library's Black History Month observance. He also talked about his own career and time spent with the Cardinals.

Following the speaking engagement, Smith took photos with attendees in the library's Great Hall. The event was free and fans were admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In a baseball-crazed town, Smith is one of the most revered personalities. He spent almost his entire career with the Cardinals and set major league records for assists and double plays.

Smith won 13 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1980-1992 and he was a 15-time All-Star. He was often a prime postseason performer for St. Louis, winning the 1985 NLCS MVP and helping the franchise make three World Series appearances.

Smith has his jersey retired by the Cardinals and is a member of the team's Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the St. Louis Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
