Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. named Honorary Starter for the 2016 Daytona 500

What becomes the next logical step for someone getting elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame? For Ken Griffey Jr., it is being named honorary starter at the Daytona 500.

Griffey will wave the green flag to kick off the 58th running of the Great American Race this Sunday.  That flat will drop at 1 p.m. at Daytona International Speedway.

In addition to Griffey making his presence felt, WWE John Cena will drive the honorary pace car and actor Gerard Butler will serve as Grand Marshall.  It is a comfortable trip to the track for the former baseball star from his home in the Orlando suburb of Windemere.

Last month, Griffey received a record 99.32 percent of the vote for induction into the Hall of Fame.  He will be officially inducted in Cooperstown, New York on July 24th.

It was certainly a eventual outcome for a player who dazzled on the diamond for 22 seasons.  Griffey finished with 630 home runs, good for sixth in Major League Baseball history.

He was a 13-time All-Star and won 10 Gold Gloves for his stellar play in center field.  Griffey was particularly impactful for the Seattle Mariners in the 1990s and was named American League Most Valuable Player in 1997.
