Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald Speaks at Neepawa Sports Dinner

Neepawa is a small, but passionate hockey community in Manitoba.  Some in the community recently enjoyed a visit from one of the greats in the sport.

Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald was the keynote speaker at the Neepawa Sports Dinner on November 5th.  The eighth annual event saw over 300 come out to Yellowhead Hall.

McDonald was able to share some entertaining stories from his career.  In addition to his presentation, the Neepawa Sportsman of the Year award was handed out.

McDonald had a 16-year career and notched 1,006 points in 1,111 games.  He was originally selected fourth overall in the 1973 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and had three straight 40-goal seasons with the franchise.

In 1979, McDonald was traded to the Colorado Rockies, where he would play parts of three seasons. He played the rest of his career with the Calgary Flames, setting a single-season record with 66 goals in 1983 and winning a Stanley Cup in 1989.

The Flames retired his #9 jersey in 1990 and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame two years later.  He is currently the Hall's chairman of the board after being on their selection committee for nine years.
