Houston Basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson Speaks at Montana Tech Commencement

This past weekend, Houston basketball coach Kelvin Sampson went back to one of the formative stops on his coaching journey. He was the commencement speaker at Montana Tech.

They held their 117th commencement at the Butte Civic Center. Sampson told the graduates the only two things in their life they can control is their attitude and effort.

There were 591 degrees and certificates handed out to 537 students at the ceremony. There was also a reception held for graduates in their families following the event.

Sampson served as an assistant at Montana State and Montana Tech for a season each before getting his first head coaching opportunity at the latter. He led the program to three straight 22-win seasons before leaving for an assistant coaching position at Washington State.

Sampson eventually took over as head coach of the Cougars and led them to the NCAA Tournament in 1994 before leaving for Oklahoma. He led the Sooners to the NCAAs in 11 of his 12 seasons.

After a two-year run at Indiana, Sampson was an NBA assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets. He took over at Houston in 2014 and has led the Cougars to back-to-back NIT appearances.
