On October 8th, one of the greatest Olympians of all-time came to Omaha, Nebraska. Iconic American swimmer Mark Spitz spoke at the Omaha YMCA gala.
The event was held to celebrate the organization's 150th anniversary. It was held beginning at 7 p.m. at CenturyLink Center.
In the afternoon, Spitz signed autographs and met with YMCA members at the downtown branch. He was certainly a fitting special guest after being introduced to swimming through the organization.
Before Michael Phelps, Spitz was the iconic name in American swimming and Olympic excellence. He swam at both the 1969 and 1972 Olympics, capturing 11 medals, nine of them gold.
At the 1972 Games, Spitz won seven golds, a feat not surpassed until Phelps won eight in Beijing in 2008. Most impressively, he also set new world records in each of those seven events.
Swimming World Magazine named him World Swimmer of the Year three times. He is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
