Inspirational baseball pitcher Dave Dravecky is making a trip to Jacksonville, Illinois next week. He will speak at a pair of events beginning with the Western Illinois Fellowship of Christian Athletes fundraising banquet on September 26th.
The event will be held at Hamilton's at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $25. On September 27th, Dravecky is speaking at MacMurray College at 11 a.m. in the Anne Merner Chapel.
He is helping the school kick off their health fair. Students and area high school groups are free to attend.
Dravecky had a brief standout career on the mound. He was named to the All-Star team in his second big league season with the San Diego Padres and helped the franchise win their first pennant in 1984.
Dravecky was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1987. A cancerous tumor was found in his pitching arm a year later and he had to have half of his deltoid muscle removed in the arm.
Dravecky still returned to pitch in 1989, but broke his humerus bone. He had to have his arm eventually amputated, but his story of overcoming obstacles has become a point of inspiration for many.
