Athletics is an avenue where all walks of life can come together to achieve common goals and find success. Despite obstacles in his life, Anthony Ianni has certainly found the positive benefits of competing in sports.
Ianni was able to share his story on September 26th at the Newtown Youth and Family Services annual breakfast and awards ceremony. The event was held at 8 a.m. at Michael's at the Grove.
Ianni talked about living with autism and overcoming bullying. Individual tickets for the event were $30.
Ianni became the first person with autism to play Division 1 basketball when he was a walk-on at Michigan State. He played for two Big Ten championship teams and the Spartans squad that reached the 2010 Final Four.
In 2012, Ianni won the MSU Unsung Player Award. He began his college basketball career at Grand Valley State University.
Ianni works as a Community Relations Advocate for the Autism Alliance of Michigan. He has also been associated with groups like Autism Speaks and the Relentless Tour.
