Inspirational surfer Bethany Hamilton has a large following in her home state of Hawaii. On Sunday, she made a book signing appearance that was well-attended in Lihue.
A large line of people descended upon Costco to have Hamilton sign copies of "Soul Surfer" and "Body & Soul: A Girl's Guide to a Fit, Fun and Fabulous Life." She also posed for photos and answered questions from the crowd.
The session was slated to last from 1-2 p.m., but Hamilton stayed around later to answer the great demand. Those who are still inspired by her story certainly left the event happy to have met her.
When Hamilton was 13, she lost her left arm to a shark attack while surfing. Just one month after the attack, she returned to the sport and remains a professional today.
In 2004, Hamilton was named Best Comeback Athlete at the ESPYs. She has made a variety of media appearances and had a 2011 feature film made that tells her story.
Hamilton competed on season 25 of the CBS reality show The Amazing Race and finished in third place with her husband, Adam Dirks. She remains a motivational speaker who travels the country inspiring others to defy the odds.
