It has been a whirlwind year for former NBA hopeful Isaiah Austin. Austin was bound for the pros out of Baylor University before it was found he had a rare life-threatening condition known as Marfan syndrome in June 2014.
As a result, he has become a spokesman for the disease. On August 7th, Austin will be the keynote speaker at The Marfan Foundation’s 31st Annual Family Conference at Navy Pier in Chicago.
In total, the conference runs August 6-9 and over 600 attendees are anticipated. It is co-hosted by Northwestern Medicine and the Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
Marfan syndrome is a condition that affects connective tissue in the body. Since Austin has come forward with this story, awareness has grown greatly.
Austin was an imposing 7’1” center during his two seasons at Baylor. As a freshman, he was an All-Rookie and third team All-Big 12 pick after averaging 13 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
In 2014, Austin was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive team and looked to be a sure-fire first round pick. Even though it came out before the draft that he could no longer play, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver still made him a ceremonial pick.
