One minor league hockey team has a special relationship with inspirational football player Devon Still. This weekend, the Syracuse Crunch welcomes Still to make an appearance at their home opener.
Still signed autographs before and during the game and also dropped the ceremonial first puck. There were also various VIP experience packages on sale that gave fans the opportunity to interact more with the former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle.
Last year, the Crunch wore Still’s #75 on their jerseys during warm-ups. Those jerseys were auctioned off after the game with the proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York.
Still gained national notoriety by helping his young daughter Leah battle Stage 4 pediatric cancer following her June 2014 diagnosis. He was cut by the Bengals that preseason but still resigned to the practice squad by the franchise in order to help may her medical bills.
The duo received the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the 2015 ESPYs. Still also was promoted from the practice squad during the 2014 season and appeared in 12 games.
Leah is now living cancer free. Still was waived by the Bengals prior to the start of this year and is still looking for his next NFL home.
