Justine Siegal Becomes Major League Baseball's First Female Coach

There is no question that the march is on to be more inclusive towards qualified coaching candidates who are women in the male-dominated world of professional sports.  Major League Baseball is the latest sport to knock down barriers with the Oakland A’s hiring of Justine Siegal

Siegal has been hired by the A’s to coach their Instructional League team this October.  She follows in the footsteps of Becky Hammon (NBA) and Jen Welter (NFL) in becoming the first women hired in any capacity to coach in the three major American professional sports leagues.

Like Hammon and Welter, Siegal has an impressive backstory littered with firsts.  She was the first woman to ever throw batting practice to MLB teams in 2011 and the first to coach pro baseball with the independent Brockton Rox in 2009.

Siegal also has a PhD in sport and exercise psychology from Springfield College.  Her non-profit, Baseball for All, works towards advancing the dreams of girls who want to compete on the diamond.

This is just the next step in a long road of trailblazing for Siegal.  While it is just a two-week gig in Oakland, there is some thought the progressive franchise may keep her around if all goes well.
