The Sewell Leadership Event, now in its 20th year, drew corporate leaders, managers, school teachers, and others from across the Permian Basin to the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center in late March. The conference lasted all day and featured a number of motivating speakers, including Heisman Trophy winner, keynote speaker Tim Tebow.

The Sewell Family of Companies hosts the event each year in an effort to assist and inspire company owners, professionals, students, and others.

Tebow is a two-time national champion at the University of Florida and the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, as well as a former NFL player and professional baseball player. He presented some of his leadership experiences as well as some of the lessons he has learned at this event. Learning where the boundaries are, he said, is one of those crucial lessons.

“Know the decisions you’re going to make before you put yourself in a particular situation,” said Tebow. “Don’t wait until you get into temptation and then figure out where the line is. … That’s something that really helped me out.”

Tebow then credited his parents for instilling that value in him.

Tebow was a first-round draft pick after playing college football  in Florida and spent two years in the NFL. In addition, the four-time New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and football analyst discussed his work with the Tim Tebow Foundation. He also discussed how believing in someone could have a positive impact on their lives.

“It’s incredible to see the difference between someone who believes in themselves and someone who doesn’t,” he said. “You have that ability to speak life into people, into your families, and your communities. You have the ability to talk to someone who is going through a rough time and believe in them. You can still believe in their work and value.”

The event was sold out this year, with approximately 1,827 individuals scheduled to attend. This year's conference was the first time it had been held in person since before the pandemic.
