One of the greatest marathon runners in American history made a stop by the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon on Saturday. Dick Beardsley was in attendance as the featured runner for the race.
Beardsley ran the half marathon that began at 7 a.m. at Milford Wampold Park. He was previously guest speaker at the event in 2013.
On Friday, Beardsley also made an appearance at the marathon expo at Crowne Plaza Executive Center. He will speak about overcoming adversity and also give tips to help runners with mental fatigue that occurs during races.
Beardsley is well-known for being the co-champion of the first London Marathon in 1981. A year later, he also waged a famous battle with Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon, eventually finishing as runner-up.
Beardsley won the 1981 and 1982 Grandma's Marathon and posted a course record time in 1981 that stood for 33 years. He is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for improving his personal best time in 13 straight marathons.
In 2010, Beardsley was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame. He currently operates the Dick Beardsley Marathon Running Camp out of Minnesota.
