Maurice Clarett Shares Life Lessons in a Speech to the Xavier Basketball Program

Maurice Clarett’s new life mission off the football field has been about impacting lives.  Clarett got the opportunity a few weeks ago to speak to the Xavier Basketball program as part of head coach Chris Mack’s Fortune 15 series.

Mack has brought in several speakers since last year that help promote the success of his student-athletes.  He wanted Clarett to do the same ever since seeing the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, ‘Youngstown Boys”, that focused on the once star running back’s rise and fall at Ohio State.

The players watched the film prior to Clarett’s arrival in Cincinnati on campus.  They perhaps learned that there was no one better to impart on them things to do and not to do.

Clarett had one of the greatest freshman seasons in college football history, rushing for 1,237 yards and 18 touchdowns.  He also scored the winning touchdown sending the Buckeyes over the University of Miami in the 2002 BCS National Championship.

Trouble soon followed.  Clarett was dismissed from Ohio State following several incidents, but still got drafted into the NFL in 2005.

Unfortunately, he was cut in training camp, and following an armed robbery and other run-ins from the law, he was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison.  Clarett turned his life around in prison, was released early, and now stands as a shining testament towards those looking to follow a better path.
