Monumental Sports & Entertainment founder Ted Leonsis has built a sports empire in the Washington D.C. area. On Thursday, he was back in his hometown of Lowell, Masschusetts and shared some anecdotes from his successful career.
Leonsis was the keynote speaker at the Entrepreneurship for All Conference at UTEC. He charted the entire course of his business career during the presentation, including how his ingenuity started right in Lowell.
EforAll gave out several awards to local organizations that mirror their mission. UTEC works to turn disconnected youth in Lowell away from violence and towards success.
Leonsis is the majority owner of the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics and Washington Valor. He also owns the building his teams plays in, the Verizon Center.
In addition to Leonsis' sports interests, he is the founder and investor for the Revolution Growth Fund. He gained his greatest business success after starting Redgate Communications Corporation in 1987.
The marketing communications company was acquired by American Online in 1993 and Leonsis served as a top executive at the company for 13 years. He currently sits on the board for several top organizations like American Express, Georgetown University and Groupon.
