New England Patriots Hall of Famer Drew Bledsoe Speaks at MIAA State Championship Breakfast

There is no denying the important role that former New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe played in the growth of the franchise. The Massachusetts sports icon was back in the state yesterday to speak to some athletes who might aspire to be the next Patriots star.

Bledsoe was the guest speaker at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's state championship breakfast. Representatives from 12 of the 16 teams that are state finalists attended the event.

Games officially kick off Saturday. In addition to speaking at the breakfast, Bledsoe took part in several other area events in town, including an appearance to be honored at The Sports Museum's "The Tradition" gala.

Bledsoe spent 14 seasons in the NFL and is best known for his run as the starting quarterback in New England from 1993-2001. After he was named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year in 1992, the Patriots selected him with the first overall pick in the 1993 NFL Draft.

Bledsoe would go on to make four Pro Bowls and lead New England to the playoffs six times. He helped the franchise reach Super Bowl XXXI and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XXXVI.

Bledsoe finished his career with the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys before retiring in 2007. He was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2011 and is currently a successful winery owner.
