New Houston Football Coach Major Applewhite Speaks at Touchdown Club Event

Even though Major Applewhite is a familiar name in the state of Texas, he has been getting out in the community to reestablish his presence as the new head coach at the University of Houston. On Wednesday, he spoke at the Touchdown Club of Houston.

Applewhite's appearance headlined the University of Houston luncheon at the JW Marriott. He discussed the outlook for his team and the various goals he has for the Cougars program.

Applewhite also spoke about the ongoing facilities upgrades for the football team. The Touchdown Club of Houston is currently welcoming several coaches and Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin is on today's schedule.

In 1998, Applewhite became a well-known name in the state by winning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year at the University of Texas. The following season, he was as first-team All-Big 12 pick and named Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Applewhite started his coaching career as a graduate assistant for the Longhorns in 2003. He took assistant jobs at Syracuse, Rice and Alabama before returning to his alma mater in 2008.

For three seasons, Applewhite was Texas' co-offensive coordinator. He has been the offensive coordinator at Houston for the past two seasons before taking over as head coach this offseason.
