Head coach at the University of Alabama football team Nick Saban spoke at the Gulf Coast Coaches Clinic last Wednesday to discuss different strategies in their profession. About 700 coaches from the Mississippi Gulf Coast area came to the three day event to learn more about handling offenses and defences.
The West Virginia native may have only played football for a year, but he has been a coach in the sport for over four decades and counting for a number of establishments. Some of the places that he worked for include Toledo, Michigan State, LSU, the Miami Dolphins, and currently Alabama University which has led him to be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame as of 2013. In addition to that, he is only one of two coaches to ever win a SEC championship with two different schools. In 2003 Saban brought the LSU Tigers to the BCS National Championship, and the Alabama Crimson Tide to both the BCS and AP national championships in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
During his speech last Wednesday, Saban discussed his hard times with Alabama’s loss to Ohio State last month in the Sugar Bowl and about his days with high school football. He reinforced how important it is to have a good mindset in the game because of how much impact it can have on a team’s results, and used their loss to Ohio State as an example. As credited by Forbes magazine, the “The Most Powerful Coach in Sports” made sure to point out how much he appreciates the work that all coaches do around the country and reiterated their influence on their players.
