Baton Rouge, Louisiana has seen an Olympic legend hanging around town quite a bit more in recent years. Mary Lou Retton has been a regular presence with her daughter McKenna Kelley competing for the LSU gymnastics team.
On October 10th, Retton was back in town as the keynote speaker for the Gardere Christian School Annual Fund Kickoff Dinner. The event was held at 7 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel.
The theme of the evening was "Living the Vision" and Retton shared her story of overcoming obstacles. Many LSU gymnasts already volunteer at the Gardere School throughout the year.
Retton dominated at the 1984 Olympics and became America's sweetheart. She won a gold medal in the all-around and won four other medals during the Games in Los Angeles.
Retton was the first American woman to win an all-around gold medal. She is credited with helping popularize the sport and four women have gone on to accomplish the feat since her triumph.
Retton became a popular personality for endorsements and also holds the distinction of being the first female athlete on the front of a Wheaties box. She was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.
