Olympic Gold Medalist Bob Schul Keynotes Cross Country Course Dedication

Last week, one of America's Olympic heroes served as a luncheon keynote speaker for a special event in the cross country world. Bob Schul helped Phipps Bend Industrial Park in Tennessee open a new cross country course.

Schul shared several fitness and training tips with those in attendance. He also gave welcomed advice on how to be mentally tough.

In addition to speaking, film was shown from Schul's Olympic triumph in 1964 in Tokyo. He said that he hopes to return to Japan when they host the next Summer Olympics in 2020.

Schul is the only American to ever win gold in the 5000 meters. He was also victorious in the race at back-to-back U.S. Championships from 1964-65.

At one time, Schul held American records in the 5000m and three-mile while he is a former two-mile world record holder as well. He retired from competition in the summer of 1965.

Schul has held various coaching positions in track and field and still trains kids near his Dayton, Ohio home. From 1996-2007, he was in charge of the cross country and track programs for men and women at Wright State University.
