Olympic Legend Mark Spitz Speaks at Alma Mater February 7th

Before Michael Phelps swam to Olympic glory, Mark Spitz was the standard for excellence in the pool. The legendary swimmer is returning to his alma mater, Indiana University, for a special speaking engagement next month. 

Spitz is keynoting the annual Sanders Speaker Series on February 7th. The event takes place at IU Southeast at 6 p.m. in the Richard K. Stern Concert Hall in the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center. 

Papa John's CEO John Schnatter will also speak as part of the series on March 17th. The Sanders Speaker Series Endowment was originally established in 2008. 

During his prodigious career, Spitz set 33 world records and won 11 Olympic medals. In 1972, he set an Olympic record with seven gold medals. 

While at IU, Spitz won eight NCAA titles. He also won five gold medals at the Pan American Games and 31 Amateur Athletic Union championships. 

On three occasions, Spitz was named World Swimmer of the Year. He is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
