Colorado resident and Olympic great Missy Franklin recently spoke at an important event for young women in Denver. She was the keynote speaker at the third annual Shrine Summit.
The event took place last Friday at Denver First Church in Cherry Hills Village. It was meant to empower girls with many being brought in from local middle and high schools.
Franklin spoke about bullying and gossiping, making sacrifices and overcoming pressure. She told the over 350 students assembled to dream big and used personal examples to hammer many of her points home.
In 2012, Franklin burst onto the Olympic stage, winning five medals. She scored gold medals in two relay events as well as the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke.
Franklin competed once again in this summer's Games and won gold in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. She currently holds the long course world record in the 200-meter backstroke.
Franklin holds a female record with 11 gold medals from the World Aquatics Championships. She was the FINA Swimmer of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
