Golfer Renee Powell's story is a vital part of the history of African-Americans breaking the color barrier in sports. That made her an ideal choice to serve as the keynote speaker at the Massillon Tigers Benchwarmers' Black History Month dinner. 

There were about 250 people gathered for the event on Saturday at Santangelo's Party Center. Powell talked about the discrimination she faced trying to make it in golf. 

She talked about how important the characteristics of competence, commitment and compassion are. The dinner served as a fundraiser for student-athletes and scholarships. 

Powell became the second African-American woman to play on the LPGA Tour in 1967. She had staying power, competing on the tour until 1980. 

Overall, Powell played in more than 250 professional events and won the Kelly Springfield Open Australia. Since leaving the tour, she has been the head professional at her family's club, Clearview Golf Club. 

In 2015, Powell played the role of trailblazer again as one of the first female members of Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. She received the highest honor of her career last year with induction into the PGA of America Hall of Fame.
