Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Johnston spoke in an area he is quite familiar with Tuesday night. Johnston was the keynote speaker at the fourth annual KidSport Nite of Champions gala in Surrey, British Columbia in Canada.
The event was held at Hazelmere Golf Club. Johnston is a favorite in the region for his time as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks and his involvement with youth hockey locally.
Each year, this gala raises around $100,000 for KidSport.
Johnston is in his second year as Penguins head coach. Last season, he went 43-27-12 and led the club to the playoffs.
In addition to his six seasons as an assistant with the Canucks, Johnston also spent time as an associate coach for the Los Angeles Kings. Prior to arriving in Pittsburgh, he has a successful run in junior hockey with the Portland Winterhawks.
Johnston compiled a 231-114-10-10 record from 2008-2014, which places him second in Winterhawks coaching wins. In the mid to late 1990s, he was also the coach and general manager with the Canadian national team.
