Beloved former Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer is going back to his alma mater as commencement speaker. Beamer will give the address at Radford University on May 6th.
Commencement proceedings take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Moffett Lawn. As a veteran of many speeches given to his teams and others in the community throughout the years, Beamer should have an inspiring presentation put together for the Class of 2017.
His coaching career originally began at Radford High School while he was doing his graduate work at Radford. In 1972, Beamer received a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling.
Beamer retired after the 2015 season having guided the Hokies to 23 straight bowl appearances. He won 238 games in 29 seasons at Virginia Tech.
Most notably, Beamer piloted the Hokies to seven conference championship and they had seven top ten finishes under his watch. He came to Blacksburg after serving as the head coach at Murray State for six seasons.
Beamer was a three-year starter at cornerback during his time as a player at Virginia Tech. He currently serves the athletic department as a special assistant to the athletic director and is one of the newest members of the College Football Playoff Committee.
