All-Star events have been known to produce lasting memories. Last night was no different when Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier won the Home Run Derby in his home ballpark.
Frazier captivated the crowd at Great American Ball Park, hitting 15 home runs in the final round to best the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Joc Pederson. He also had two dramatic wins in the opening rounds against Prince Fielder of the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson.
Frazier will bat second and start at third in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. While it has been a down season for the Reds, he has certainly been the toast of the town with 25 home runs and a .284 batting average at the break.
This was his second consecutive Home Run Derby and Midsummer Classic bid. He finished second at the derby last year to Yoenis Cespedes.
Perhaps Frazier is the kind of young star that can help usher baseball into a new era of popularity. The derby was certainly a hit last night, generating a 4.9 overnight rating after switching to a new timed format that was applauded across social media.
It is not like being in the spotlight is anything new for Frazier. He was a star for his Toms River, New Jersey team that won the 1998 Little League World Series.
That set the course for the rest of his baseball success. The Reds selected Frazier 34th overall in the 2007 MLB Draft and he debuted in the big leagues in 2011.
Since, he has become the face of the Reds and beloved in Cincinnati. The rest of the country got to see that popularity firsthand last night.
