Two prominent Major League Baseball relief pitchers are combining to make a difference with the National Youth Volunteer Program. An ad spot produced for the MLB Network was released with the San Diego Padres’ Craig Kimbrel and Colorado Rockies’ LaTroy Hawkins.
The players are seen promoting the Action Team. Other players like Max Scherzer and Giancarlo Stanton have already joined the cause.
MLB and the Volunteers of America have had a relationship since 2003. The players promote the opportunity for high school students to become local leaders in their communities by joining the action team.
Kimbrel has been one of baseball’s best closers for the last several seasons. Prior to this season, he had been to four straight All-Star games and led the National League in saves each year.
His 46 saves in 2011 are a rookie record and garnered him the NL Rookie of the Year award. While he had spent his entire career with the Atlanta Braves, he was traded to the Padres right before the start of this season.
Hawkins has had longevity and at 42 years old is the oldest active player in baseball today. He has pitched in over 1,000 games and played for ten different franchises.
While suiting up for all those teams, he is best known for the first nine years of his career with the Minnesota Twins. Hawkins first debuted as a starter, but quickly became a reliable relief arm and has racked up 125 saves in his career.
