Retired Harlem Globetrotter Melvin Adams Speaks at Goliad Elementary School

During his career as a Harlem Globetrotter standout, Melvin Adams was used to putting a smile on people’s faces.  Now, as a speaker to groups everywhere, he also entertains, albeit in a different way.

Adams was on-hand Thursday in San Angelo, Texas at Goliad Elementary School’s pep rally to inspire and help the school raise money.  He was in town for four days and made stops at nine schools in the area.

The chief task of Adams’ visit was to drum up support for a celebrity basketball game that will help the school district put down a new gym floor.  The school has already raised over half of the projected $30,000 needed for the upgrade.

Adams was a multi-time winner of the “Mr. Globetrotter” award while playing for the iconic basketball team.  He retired from the Globetrotters in 2000 and began working towards finding ways to inspire others.

Adams found his way to one of the greatest stages in entertainment despite a tough upbringing.  He grew up in a rough Houston, Texas neighborhood and lost his father when he was only 13.

The basketball court was where Adams perseverance shined.  He starred at Eisenhower High School and was a two-time Division III All-American at San Jose Christian College.
