Retired Manager Lou Piniella Holds Chicago Book Signings Thursday

Former manager Lou Piniella is talking about his successful career with the new memoir, "Lou: Fifty Years of Kicking Dirt, Playing Hard and Winning Big in the Sweet Spot of Baseball." On Thursday, he will make a pair of appearances in Chicago to promote the book. 

The first event is a luncheon at the Union League Club at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $45 and copies of Piniella's book will be available for purchase. 

At 7 p.m., Piniella will be at Anderson's Bookshop in La Grange. Those that want a spot in the signing line have to buy a book from the store. 

Prior to becoming an accomplished manager, Piniella had a 16-year playing career. He won the American League Rookie of the Year in 1969 and an All-Star in 1972. 

Piniella played for the New York Yankees from 1974-84 and became their manager in 1986. He moved on to the Cincinnati Reds and won a World Series in 1990. 

Piniella experienced his greatest managerial success with the Seattle Mariners, including winning a record-tying 116 regular season wins in 2001. He also had stints as a manager with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Chicago Cubs.
