There is no telling the countless individuals that have been inspired by Jim Morris' story. The former pitcher that came out of nowhere to make a major league debut at the age of 35 has spoken to countless audiences across the country.
Morris will also be the special guest speaker this June in Longview, Texas at the second annual ETvarsity Best Preps Banquet. The event will honor over 250 high school athletes on June 14th at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center.
The event will be open to the public and tickets will go on sale in May. Last year, Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker was the keynote speaker.
Morris was a star amateur baseball player and got selected by both the New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Brewers in the draft. He would eventually sign with the Brewers, but arm injuries forced him out of baseball within four years after never advancing past the single-A level.
Morris went on with his life as a high school baseball coach and teacher in Big Lake, Texas. After winning a district title with his team, he made good on a promise to pursue his dream of playing in the big leagues.
The 35-year-old impressed in a tryout with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and after rising quickly through the minor leagues that summer, he made his major league debut on September 18th, 1999. Morris struck out the first batter he faced, Royce Clayton, and would make four more appearances that season and 16 the following year.
Morris story was made for Hollywood. As a result, he released the autobiography "The Oldest Rookie" and Disney made a film that was released in 2002 called "The Rookie".
