There is a great youth movement in Major League Baseball and leading the charge are the Atlanta Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. and the Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani. On Tuesday, the two players were respectively named National League and American League Rookie of the Year.
The pair won their awards convincingly, with Acuna garnering 27 of 30 first-place votes and Ohtani capturing 25 of 30 first-place votes. They were the only rookies to hit over 20 home runs.
Acuna helped the Braves made an 18-game turnaround and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. He started hot in Spring Training and road that during the season, finishing the year hitting .293 with 26 home runs and 64 RBI.
Acuna is one of just five players in MLB history to have 26 homers by their 21st birthday. He was particularly stellar in the second half of the season and his 3.4 WAR was second among all NL players after the All-Star break.
Ohtani came over from Japan and took the baseball world by storm by being the first player to regularly pitch and play the field in 99 years. He joined Babe Ruth as the only players to make ten pitching appearances and hit 20 home runs in the same season.
Ohtani's time on the mound was shortened due to injury, but he still went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. At the dish, he batted .285 with 22 homers and 61 RBI.
